Monday-converter: from “Can we import this?” to building our own migration tool

A few months ago, we faced a problem we hadn't expected. A client wanted to move almost 500 projects from Monday to ClickUp. Thousands of tasks, subtasks and years of information had to come along. The obvious solution? Just import everything.
Except it didn't work quite like that. The biggest issue was the structure of the projects. Monday and ClickUp handle subtasks differently, meaning that a standard import could turn carefully organised projects into a long list of separate tasks. For a few projects, you can fix that manually.
For almost 500? Not really. So we asked ourselves: “What if we build the solution ourselves?”
And that's where things got interesting.
I started looking into how we could get the information out of Monday and rebuild it properly in ClickUp. I'll be honest: this wasn't something I knew how to do from day one.
There was a lot of figuring things out, testing, breaking things and trying again.
First one project. Then ten. Then more.
Every test uncovered something new: a field that worked differently, a subtask that needed to be handled differently, a date that needed to be split into a start and due date.
Slowly, what started as an experiment became a proper migration tool.
Today, it can move projects from Monday to ClickUp while keeping the important structure intact, including tasks, subtasks, custom fields, dates and project organisation.
And the best part? We didn't just solve it for one client.
We've created an option for other companies that are currently working in Monday and considering a move to ClickUp. Because changing your project management platform shouldn't mean leaving years of work behind or spending weeks rebuilding everything manually.
Your projects can come with you.
What started with “Can we import this?” eventually became:“Yes. We can.”
That's one of the things I enjoy most about working at Compass. Sometimes you don't start with the answer. You start with a problem, figure it out, and end up building something that can help many more people along the way. Thinking about moving from Monday to ClickUp?
The migration doesn't have to be the thing holding you back.
